Serato announces the release of Video-SL 1.1

Serato Audio Research are excited to announce the release of Video-SL1.1, a software plug-in for Scratch Live that adds the ability to playback and mix video files.

Previously only available to owners of the Rane TTM 57SL, 1.1 now offers support for the popular Rane SL 1 and MP 4. This, along with increased functionality, additional MIDI control features and a new offline player, solidifies Video-SL as the most ground-breaking digital DJ plug-in to date.

Since its release in January 2008, Video-SL has been embraced by thousands of Scratch Live DJs, taking advantage of the easy-to-use and intuitive user interface to bring a new visual component to their performances. The plug-in can now be used by all Rane SL 1 and MP4 customers via MIDI mapping with third party controllers.

“We had always intended to support the SL 1 and MP4,” explains Sam Gribben, General Manager at Serato Audio Research. “By opening it up to the TTM 57SL first, we were able to work with a smaller number of power users to create a stable, reliable foundation, which is the most important aspect of any software we develop.”

A new offline player joins the feature list in this version of Video-SL, allowing video files to be previewed and managed without having any hardware connected. Any performer can now prepare effects on each video file, to be saved and stored, ready for the next show.

Video Instant Doubles allow you to play the same video and effects on a second deck, while new Audio Responsive effects let the music control a variety of live video effects. These vary from Bass Zoom to Splits, and are controlled by analyzing the music signal. These progressive effects add a unique dimension to any visual set.

“People will be blown away by the new features in Video-SL 1.1” says Video-SL Lead Developer Nathan Holmberg. “A lot of time has gone into implementing feature requests from our customers. This release blurs the line between VJ and DJ, making it not only a lot more accessible for everyone, but a lot more fun.”

Video-SL 1.1 is a free upgrade for existing owners and will be in Public Beta early February.

New for 2009, Serato Scratch Live 1.9 now arms DJs with more tools than ever. This free upgrade places a stunning array of features at DJ’s fingertips, enabling creative possibilities never seen before. Major new features include SP-6 Sample Player, LiveFeed, native MEP-7000 support, Loop Roll, enhanced History, and support for Video-SL 1.1.

The new SP-6 Sample Player adds six extra audio players that can be triggered with the computer keyboard or a MIDI controller, turning compatible Rane hardware into a high performance sampler.

Brand new in Scratch Live 1.9 is a groundbreaking feature called LiveFeed, taking live external audio and placing it directly on a Scratch Live virtual deck, all in real time. The DJ has instant control of live external audio with Vinyl, CD or MIDI.

“LiveFeed gives DJs a live stream of audio to mess with, the creative possibilities are really endless,” reports General Manager, Sam Gribben.

The Pioneer MEP-7000 gains plug-and-play native support, joining the popular Pioneer CDJ-400 as a Scratch Live control surface. Control CDs are not required, and song data is shown directly on the MEP-7000’s displays.

Loop Roll adds an interesting new stutter effect, which can also be used in conjunction with the new LiveFeed feature.

The History function now keeps a comprehensive record of every track played, during every gig. This is a real time saver for professional DJs who need to log their sessions.

Album Art is also added to the virtual deck in Scratch Live, assisting with rapid song identification.
Scratch Live 1.9 also adds offline video playback, in conjunction with the Video-SL 1.1 plug-in, also being shown at NAMM 2009. This feature lets Serato Video-SL users manage effects, cue and loop points for their videos without hardware connected. Video-SL 1.1 adds support for the Rane SL 1 and Rane MP 4.

Image Line Software has released its latest synthesizer, Ogun. Named after the god of iron*, Ogun is a powerful synthesizer for creating real metallic sounds, although it's not limited to this genre. Ogun's distinctive synthesis engine can generate more than 32,000 harmonics, modulated by 'harmonic mapping' functions, that hand tonal control directly to the user.

*In Haitian Vodou and Yoruba mythology, Ogun is a god and orisha who presides over fire, iron, politics, hunting and war.

Ogun has been developed by the Chief Software Architect of Image Line Software Didier Dambrin. In the beginning Didier made a quick addiditve synth for the chimes, experimented with a "crazy" number of harmonics and as a result it created nice metallic sounds. This inspired him to built a totally new additive synth engine based on FFT (Fast Fourier Transforms) and to test it in combination with love philter, env controller, reverb and flangus.

"I found the experiment worked perfectly and made fantastic gong sounds. So knowing what the synth needed, I built the additive engine into the Sytrus architecture and removed the stuff that it didn't need. That's how Ogun was born", explained Didier Dambrin.

The 'Additive synthesis' engine that lies is in the heart of Ogun creates complex waveforms by combining sine-waves of harmonic multiples of the fundamental frequency and generates 32,767 harmonics.

The Timbre section shapes the harmonic spectrum and controls change the weighting, or probability, that each harmonic in the spectra will sound.

One of the easiest ways to create new and complex timbres in Ogun is to use the resynthesis functions. Ogun can analyze an input sound and automatically recreate the timbral essence of the sound. Ogun can create unique harmonic mappings based on the start and on the end of the sample. By morphing between these harmonic mappings the original harmonic motion is reproduced.

Expressive performance is captured with the X-Y modulation window, freely assignable (to target synthesis parameters in Ogun) and can be quickly linked to any external controller.

Ogun comes with several quality effects: EQ, Chorus, Delay, Reverb, Filter, Unison.

Key features:

* A massive additive synthesis engine (up to 32,767 harmonics)

* Realistic metallic timbres through harmonic randomization or timbre analysis (resynthesis)

* Fast, precise tonal shaping through multipoint envelopes (of Sytrus fame)

* Advanced Unison engine

* XY modulation pad for live expressive control

* Effects: Filter, Chorus, Delay, Reverb and EQ

* Space-saving GUI

Plugin formats: Ogun can be used as a VSTi plugin. A FL Studio plugin version is in process of development.

System requirements:
Operating System: Windows XP/Vista
Processor: Minimum 2GHz AMD or Intel Pentium III compatible with SSE1 support
RAM: 512 MB
Hard disk space: 130 MB

Pricing and availability:
Ogun can be ordered from the FL Studio Web shop for US $ 79.

A fully functional demo is available at http://www.image-line.com/documents/ogun.html.

For more information, visit their web site at www.image-line.com.

DaScratch is a USB-MIDI controller that combines fast response, easy customization, and a compact form factor to create an ideal instrument for any digital DJ looking for total control over their software. Small and portable, DaScratch makes a space-friendly addition to any existing DJ gear set-up or can stand on its own as a complete controller solution.

DaScratch marks the introduction of Stanton's StanTouch® technology, which allows DJs to use traditional performance motions and gestures on a touch-pad style surface. "With SCS.3d, we stepped back from the playing field and created something unique using emerging touch technology," states Jim Mazur, Stanton's Director of Product Development. "DJs are constantly looking for new ways to interact with their music. By studying their actions and creating a control surface analogy, we are able to bring some fresh ideas to fruition without being held back by traditional ways of interfacing with equipment."

The StanTouch® interface is highly responsive to popular functions such as scratching, scrubbing, and navigating through digital audio files. In addition, tactile buttons, triggers, and virtual faders are able to control samples, pitch, effects, cue and loop points, and other mappable functions. Multiple finger touches can also prompt quick kills on EQ's or transform effects on volume.

Another notable feature of the SCS.3d is the implementation of DaRouter® software. DaRouter allows customized support and control over most DJ, DAW, and audio applications. DaRouter also enables DaScratch to provide two-way user feedback by illuminating LEDs to indicate the status of buttons, triggers, virtual faders, and transport controls. A preset library is also available on the Stanton website that supports popular applications such as Traktor™, Traktor Scratch™, Ableton Live™, and Serato Scratch Live™. A complete list of supported current applications is available at www.StantonDJ.com.

According to Timothy Dorwart, CEO of the Stanton Group, "DaScratch reflects our commitment to deliver products based on technology, innovation and differentiation. The flexibility and affordability of DaScratch will attract new users to digital DJing while at the same time providing professional DJ's with a useful tool to augment their current rigs."

For simple connectivity into any set-up or environment, DaScratch features USB connection, allowing easy plug and play connection to your software. The unit is class compliant with Windows XP, Vista and Mac OSX to ensure that drivers are never needed, and is bus powered by design to ensure that no external power or batteries need to be used.

Additionally, the DaScratch employs the Magnect® connection system, allowing multiple SCS.3d units to securely snap together magnetically, creating a larger control surface with increased performance options. MSRP: $299
